History

Gold Rush era: Grass Valley's origins trace back to the late 1840s when settlers discovered gold in the area. The discovery of gold in quartz rock in 1850 spurred a massive boom, attracting prospectors from all over the world.

Cornish miners: The city's growth was significantly shaped by a large influx of skilled hard-rock miners from Cornwall, England, who arrived starting around the 1860s. Their legacy is still celebrated through local traditions like the annual Cornish Christmas.

Most prosperous mining town: During its century-long mining history, Grass Valley was California's richest gold mining town, with mines like the Empire and North Star yielding more than $400 million in gold.

High-tech transition: Following the decline of gold mining in the 1950s, the area diversified its economy. In the 1950s and 60s, vacuum tube manufacturing pioneer Charley Litton and video broadcast equipment innovator Donald Hare helped establish a new, thriving high-tech industry in the area, earning it the nickname "Silicon Valley of the Sierras".
